Non-Profit Status

Effective October 15, 2018, the IRS has classified HeroGrown Foundation as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code.

Previously, HeroGrown Foundation operated in association with Grow for Vets USA, a 501(c)(19) nonprofit organization. As a tax-exempt war veterans' organization consisting of at least 90% war veterans, donations to Grow for Vets are tax deductible under the following IRS guidelines:

(IRS.gov) Tax treatment of donations: Donations to war veterans' organizations are deductible as charitable contributions on the donor's federal income tax return. At least 90% of the organization's membership must consist of war veterans. The term war veterans means persons, whether or not present members of the United States Armed Forces, who have served in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war (including the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, the Persian Gulf war, and later declared wars).

Rev. Rul. 84-140,1984-39 I.R.B. 5, which modified and superseded Rev. Rul. 59-151, 1959-1 C.B.53, defines “war veterans” as persons, whether or not present members of the United States Armed Forces, who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States during a period of war (including the Korean and Vietnam conflicts).
